Assessment of SUNLAND Aloe Vera (TriPlus) within the context of the Dutch Fertilizing Substances Act

Summary and Conclusions

Sunland Europe BV wishes to introduce the product Aloe Vera TriPlus to the Dutch market as a biostimulant for plant growth. Aloe Vera TriPlus is a product made from fermented extract of Aloe Vera leaves, enriched with seaweed extract, microbes and molasses. In addition to natural ingredients and functional micro-organisms, the product also contains primary nutrients and organic matter. Mr. Frank van der Loop of Sunland Europe BV has asked the Nutrient Management Institute (NMI) to determine whether the product can be traded on the Dutch market as a biostimulant. Using the information provided by Mr. Van der Loop, NMI has made an assessment based on the Fertilizing Substances Act and the associated Implementation Decree and Implementing Provision(s).

The results of the assessment by NMI indicate the following:

  • Aloe Vera TriPlus can be traded and used in the Netherlands as a biostimulant for plant growth and soil fertility.

Purpose

Sunland Europe BV wishes to introduce Aloe Vera TriPlus, a product made from Aloe Vera leaves, molasses and seaweed on the Dutch market. They have asked NMI to investigate the extent to which Aloe Vera TriPlus should be assessed within the legal context of the Fertilizing Substances Act. In addition to natural ingredients and functional micro-organisms, the product also contains primary nutrients and organic matter. Mr. Frank van der Loop has therefore provided NMI with the chemical analysis results, plus a certificate of analysis for the product from the Indonesian producer PT. Tri Indah Mandiri, and a Material Safety Data Sheet, also from the producer.

Assignment

Sunland Europe BV has asked the Nutrient Management Institute (NMI) to determine whether the Dutch Fertilizing Substances Act applies to the trade and use of Aloe Vera TriPlus as a biostimulant. The information about the product necessary for this has been provided as the basis for the evaluation by NMI.

Details of SUNLAND Aloe Vera TriPlus

Introduction

Aloe Vera TriPlus is produced by AloveBali in Bali, Indonesia and imported by Sunland Europe BV. The information in this chapter has been provided by Sunland Europe BV and consists of a chemical analysis results of Aloe Vera TriPlus, an indication of levels by the producer (PT. Tri Indah Mandiri, certificate of analysis 02-02-2011 and a TIM Material Safety Data Sheet. In addition, information from the producer's website http://www.aloeveafertilizer.com has been used as well as verbal information provided by Mr. Frank van der Loop.

Production (From producer's website)

Aloe Vera leaves are harvested from local organic plantations and from contracted growers all on the island of Bali, Indonesia. The harvested Aloe Vera leaves are then thoroughly washed. The leaves are then mechanically sliced and diced then sent through a conveyor crushing plant for extraction of the Aloe Vera liquid. The liquid is then passed through three fine mesh filters to separate solids and particulate matter.

The filtered Aloe Vera liquid is then pumped into large covered underground concrete tanks for ambient temperature (about 18-25 C) fermentation for approximately 3-4 weeks. Following this initial ambient temperature fermentation the liquid is then pumped through PVC piping to above ground 5200L steel fermentation tanks.

Then, thoroughly washed seaweed which has been milled to a particle size is added to the Aloe Vera liquid in the above ground tanks. The final additives are locally produced molasses plus microbial cultures. The principal purpose of the molasses is to feed the functional microbial. Seaweed has a number of beneficial elements for soil health.

After the "secondary" fermentation period where all ingredients are present, a final filtration process occurs prior to bottling.

In addition to nutrients, the product contains,

  • micro elements (trace element), amino acids, PGR, enzymes and active ingredients compounds (aloin, barbaloin, etc.)
  • Enriched functional organisms,
  • Enriched humic acid

Assessment of SUNLAND Aloe Vera TriPlus

Definition of a fertilizer

The product Aloe Vera TriPlus has been assessed according to the Dutch legislation regarding the marketing of fertilizers. The Fertilizing Substances Act indicates regulations in general terms. These are detailed in the Fertilizing Substances Implementation Decree and the Fertilizing Substances Implementing Provision(s).

The Fertilizing Substances Act defines fertilizers as:

"livestock manures, regardless of their use, and products intended:

  1. To be added to soil or growing medium which consist wholly or partially of substances, including organisms, or mixtures of substances which can serve to make soil or growing medium suitable or more suitable as substrate for plants;
  2. to be used as growing medium;
  3. to be used as food for plants or parts of plants "

The Fertilizing Substances Implementation Decree further details this:

  1. The fertilizer is in a usable condition for the practice and is uniform in composition.
  2. The fertilizer provides nourishment for plants or parts of plants, in the form of primary or secondary nutrients and micro-nutrients or improves the soil properties by providing organic matter or by maintaining or reducing the acidity in the soil, and effectively performs the action for which the substance is primarily intended.
  3. Under normal usage conditions, the fertilizer has no harmful effects on the health of humans, animals or plants or the environment.

Aloe Vera TriPlus is a homogeneous liquid which, in addition to primary nutrients, contains organic matter. Aloe Vera TriPlus consists of a mixture of substances and organisms which, according to the composition and usage instructions, are to be added to soil to thereby improve the suitability of the soil as growing medium for plants.

Aloe Vera as a supplier of primary nutrients

When a liquid organic fertilizer is intended to supply the primary nutrients N and/or P2O5 and/or K2O, the content of these primary nutrients must be at least 0.5% of the dry matter content. Aloe Vera TriPlus meets this requirement. From the data provided, the levels of N (8-15% of dry matter), P2O5 (4.9 to 13% of dry matter) and K2O (4.2-15% of dry matter) can be calculated. Aloe Vera TriPlus thus meets the minimum levels required of other organic fertilizer for these three primary nutrients on a dry matter basis.

Aloe Vera TriPlus is marketed in the Netherlands in 1 L bottles. The information provided by the producer indicates Aloe Vera TriPlus should be applied in a 1:100 to 1:2000 dilutions, depending on the crop and the harvesting stage. For annual crops, the recommended total dosing of Aloe Vera TriPlus is 10 L per hectare during the entire growing season. For other crops, it is 10-20 per hectare during the entire growing season.

Aloe Vera as a supplier of organic matter

When the fertilizer is intended to supply organic matter, the amount of organic matter in the dry matter content must be at least 20%. Aloe Vera TriPlus amply satisfies this requirement. From the data provided, the proportion of organic matter in the dry matter content of Aloe Vera TriPlus can be calculated as 74% -100%.

Aloe Vera TriPlus as a biostimulant

Aloe Vera TriPlus is traded by Sunland Europe on the Dutch market as a biostimulant. Biostimulants can be freely traded and used in the Netherlands.
